Makerspace at Napa Valley College: Rules & Guidelines

Safety and Space Guidelines

  • Makerspace worker/instructor must be in the space before any student operates the machines.
  • No horseplay is allowed in the space.
  • If you’re unsure of a safe way to proceed with a project ask someone who is qualified for help.
  • Never strike tools or machines with a hard-faced hammer.
  • Report unsafe or hazardous conditions wherever noted. Take time to correct simple hazards that you see before they become a problem.
  • Use tools for intended purposes only. For example, Screwdrivers are not pry bars or chisels.
  • Use appropriate respiratory protection. Projects that create excessive dust or fumes must be done in a properly ventilated area.
  • Use proper techniques when moving or lifting heavy objects. I don’t care how much you bench, get a buddy.
  • Be aware of emergency procedures. Locate first aid kits, fire extinguishers.

  • Safety goggles or prescription safety glasses with side guards attached must be worn at all times.
  • No loose-fitting clothing. Long sleeves will be rolled up. No hoodies.
  • No rings, bracelets, or watches. This includes wedding bands, with no exceptions. Necklaces will be tucked into shirts as well as ties.
  • Long hair will be tied back or tucked into shirt.
  • Close-toed shoes are required at all times, no flip-flops or sandals are allowed at any time. Shoes must cover the entire foot.
  • No skirts, shorts, or capris. Legs must be completely covered.
  • Do not work in the lab if tired or in a hurry.
  • Under no circumstances is any individual under the influence allowed inside the lab. This is not limited to alcohol.
  • Report any injury immediately to the current Makerspace supervisor.

  • For projects, a written plan is required detailing the project with dimensioning where applicable.
  • No projects may be completed using equipment the individual is not qualified to operate. No exceptions.
  • All equipment and space must be cleaned prior to leaving the lab. This includes but is not limited to equipment, tools, floor space, and tables.
  • Machines must be turned off prior to cleaning.
  • Always clean machines with a brush, vacuum or appropriate equipment. Do not use your hand to wipe away material.
  • Think through your entire project before starting.
  • Before starting any machine, ensure that it is in-fact safe to do so.
  • Before starting a machine, familiarize yourself with the emergency cut-off switches and power cords, in case of an accident.
  • Do not adjust speeds on mill, band saw, or mill unless properly trained to do so. You must also be able to properly articulate the necessity.
  • Remove all non-essential tooling from the work area and from machine tables.
  • No tools will be removed from the shop without prior authorization. Tools removed will be noted on the tool sign out sheet and returned within the time frame allotted.
  • Report any broken equipment or tools. Do not attempt to use anything you think may be broken or damaged.
  • Do not modify or disassemble any equipment without first speaking with maker lab staff.

Makerspace Computer Use Policy

1. Lab computers are to be used for educational purposes only. 

2. Lab computers are used by many other students during the day. Do not adjust or customize the display (monitor) or the workings of the computer in any way. This includes background wallpaper on the desktop and resolution settings of the display adaptor or adjustment of the actual computer monitor hardware. (If you need special accommodation for a visual problem or otherwise, make a request and we will review your consideration.)
 

3. Internet access is a privilege. Do not access questionable websites. Do not download and install any software or games. Access to the internet is limited to needs for projects. Any other access is not allowed without permission.
 

4. The lab computers are for learning and studying. Do not play computer games of any kind. Playing computer games is something that you can do at home, on your own computer, in your own time.
 

5. Do not touch the computer monitor screen with any items or especially with your fingers. There is absolutely no reason why anyone needs to touch the monitor screens. If you wish to point out something on your screen to another person, point without touching. 
 

6. Each student is required to clean their workstation before leaving. 
 

7. Please keep in mind at all times that computer use in this lab is not your private business. All access on this network is logged and may be reviewed at any time. The activity on your screen when you are working in this network can and may be recorded for later review as well.
 

8. Take all phone calls outside.

9. Students may keep drinks/food at designated areas at the back of the room. Liquids in a closed container on the floor. Please eat outside whenever possible. Privileges may be revoked at any time if policies are abused. No gum or gum chewing is allowed in the space.
 

10. If you do not understand something, ask the instructor. I will be more than happy to assist you.
 

11. The restrooms are located in the 1800 builder above us, on the south end of the building (toward the library).
 

12. In the event of a major disaster or emergency, the instructor is to lead the students to the grassy area between the 1700 and the 2000 (between the new library and science buildings) or to the sports track.
 

13. Failure to comply with any of these directives can result in suspension from computer use.
