The McCarthy Library, in line with its mission, purchases electronic resources (or “e-resources”) to support the NVC Community’s research needs. Some examples of electronic resources are:
Databases (e.g. Periodical databases) (full-text preferable)
Electronic journals
Electronic newspapers
Online reference tools
Electronic books
Electronic textbooks
Streaming video
Electronic magazines (magazines are available via the Napa County Catalog / consortia. Additional log-in with a library card may be required). Visit the NVC library catalog to access.
Librarians conduct reviews of e-resources and select them with the intention of increasing accessibility by making materials available on- and off-campus. NVC faculty, staff and students are welcome to submit recommendations for electronic resources and librarians will work with them to determine the relevance and suitability of recommended e-resources. Librarians take some of the following factors into consideration when making final decisions on e-resources:
Provides information not available in print (in some cases, the library will keep both a digital and print copy of books.)
Vendor reputation
Privacy policy that respects the NVC Community’s safety
Accessibility compliance (e.g., Closed Captioning)
Cost
Level of interdisciplinarity
User support
Level of access (e.g., remote use available, support for distance learning programs)
