Library-100: Information & Library Research Skills

Course Description:
The course will help students acquire information literacy skills necessary to conduct academic or personal research. It provides a step-by-step guide to the research process that is applicable to term papers, course work, and life-long learning. It emphasizes developing effective search strategies, selecting information tools, locating and retrieving information sources, analyzing and critically evaluating information, and using information.

By the end of this course, the student will:

  • Generate and develop a research topic and research strategy.
  • Locate relevant sources (articles, books/ebooks, websites, etc.).
  • Evaluate, analyze, and cite information sources.
  • Apply database search techniques.
  • Analyze social, ethical, and legal issues relating to information and its use.

A: Here’s some additional reasons to consider Lib-100:  

Lib-100 fits into a group of new courses that fulfill an Additional Graduation Requirement specific to Napa Valley College. This group is part of the new “Health, Wellness and Self-Development” graduation requirement. Lib-100 satisfies this requirement by meeting the criteria included in the following categories: 

•Academic and/or Career Advancement: Courses foster exploration and development of personal, academic or career goals. 
• Personal Development: Courses focus on enhancement of emotional intelligence, self-awareness and/or creative expression. 

2. Q: When will I be able to register for this course?

A. Open registration is June 17 for the Fall 2025 semester. Anyone can register on this date. Check priority registration dates with your counselor if you have questions on this. See Q. 3 below for counseling contact info.
