Research Scavenger Hunt
Instructions: Please complete the following steps.
1) Acquire or open a research log. This can be a notebook (my preference) or a word processing folder on your computer. Please identify which you are using here and why:
2) Once you’ve chosen a topic (a recent ancestor), spend at least 15 minutes writing down what you know and what you seek to know about your ancestor in each milieu category listed below.
3) Schedule and conduct a research interview with an NVC librarian to help you find appropriate and helpful sources.
3) Then, to help you research and reconstruct the milieu of your ancestor, identify one helpful source for each category below and provide both an MLA citation and a short annotation (briefly summarize it and state how it will be useful to your project). Your source may be found through the following:
Online Databases available to you: ArtStor (for photos), Credo (for background research), CountryWatch (for country-specific information), Calisphere (for images and other California documents), Films On Demand (for educational videos), Ethnic Diversity Source (for periodicals, scholarly articles, and some videos).
Print Resources: Napa Valley College Library System (for books within the Napa Valley Library system), periodicals (magazines and newspapers), Encyclopedic References.
Please note that you must use at least one of each of the following sources in your Portrait: books/e-books, encyclopedic reference, photos, audio/video document, personal interview (that you conduct), scholarly article. So, start practicing accessing each of these now!
