APA Style 7th Edition: Reference Page

The Reference Page

The Reference Page

When you use information from other sources, you already know that you need to use an in-text citation, but you also need to do a bibliographic citation for the work so that people have enough information to look up the source that you have cited.  The reference page is called a Works Cited page in MLA formatting, and you will sometimes hear people refer to it as a bibliography.  For APA formatting, we call this page "References."

  • Start on the next blank page after your conclusion.  Use a page break to help you with this.
  • Use the center align button and type the word "References" at the top of the page and bold the text.  (Don't include the quotation marks.  They are there to highlight the word that you should use.)
  • Hit enter.  Use your left align button.
  • Your references should be in alphabetical order by the author's last name.  If you don't have an author, but are using editors in place of authors, then you will use the first listed editor's last name.  If you have no author or editor, use the title.
  • Type the first reference, remember that it should be alphabetically first.
  • If your citation goes onto the second line or further, use a hanging indent for the second line and any successive lines.
  • If you find that the whole citation moves when you try to do the hanging indent, put the cursor in front of the second line and hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.  Then, use the indent arrow, which you can find on both the Microsoft Word and Google Docs toolbars.
  • Your citations should be double-spaced just like the rest of your paper.

Here are screenshots of where to find the indent button on Microsoft Word and Google Docs and a screenshot of a reference page:

Bibliographic Citations

Bibliographic Citations

The information below is a consolidation from the OWL at Purdue, and the original content can be accessed via this link.  Note that "F" stands for first initial of the author's first name, and "M" stand for the first initial of the author's middle name.  So, if the author's name is Larry Scott Jones, I would use "L" for "Larry" and "S" for Scott, so I would use this for my author's name in the citation:  Jones, L. S.
