This LibGuide focuses on women who have contributed to California's rich history.

Introduction

Artists stir our emotions and stimulate our senses, and California's women artists are masterful at doing just this.  Here are just a few of the amazing women who have contributed to California's art scene.

Actors

America Ferrera

 

Contribution:  America Ferrera is an award-winning actress who has consistently advocated for Chicana and Latina actresses to be treated as equals and not typecast in Hollywood.

Contribution:  Angelina Jolie is not only known for her acting, but also for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of refugees, particularly those coming out of Cambodia, Darfur, and Jordan, among others.  She has worked closely with the United Nations.

Contribution: Elizabeth Montgomery is often remember for her role as Samantha on the hit television series Bewitched, but she also championed women's rights and gay rights.

Contribution:  A true chameleon, Paula Abdul has been able to reinvent her image several times, but she is most known for her songs produced in the 1980s and 1990s.  Her animated music video for her song, "Opposites Attract," which aired on MTV is especially memorable and garnered her a Grammy.

Contribution: Sarah Cahill is a highly accomplished pianist who is a fierce advocate for the inclusion of female composers into the musical canon.  She also champions modern and contemporary composers and is known for her radio show, Revolutions Per Minute, which aired on KALW 91.7 FM out of San Francisco.

Artists

Edythe Boone

Contribution:  Working in the Bay Area, Edythe Boone combines her skills as a painter with her advocacy.  Her work has tackled topic such as the 1980s crack epidemic in America, AIDS, poverty, racial discrimination, and gender inequality.  She was also one of seven female artists who painted the famous MaestraPeace mural on the Women's Building in San Francisco, California.

Mabel Hutchinson

 

Contribution:  Mabel Hutchinson is most known for her intricate wooden sculptures that celebrate nature and her Native American heritage.  At auction, some of her pieces have garnered six figures.

Helen Lundeberg

 

Contribution: In 1934, along with Lorser Feitelson, painter Helen Lundeberg founded Subjective Classicism, better known as Post Surrealism.   She also participated in the Hard-edge Painting movement.  Her works currently hang in prestigious museums, such as Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C., and .the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
