Napa Valley College has a long history of student publications. Journalism students and the Associated Student Body of Napa Valley College, among other student groups, have produced various publications in an effort to get news out to the college community. Some publications had long runs, and some had short runs. By looking at the earliest publications, like The Chieftan, to some of the newest publications, like the Napa Valley College Times, one can observe some fascinating trends and even some topics that are still relevant today. Because we do not have all copies of all of the publications, we cannot be certain of the exact start date or end date for most of these publications, but we can say with certainty that the Napa Valley College Times did publish its last issue in 1999. The Jay Seer was the first student publication at Napa Valley College. It was replaced by The Chieftan.

The Chieftan is one of the first student publications at Napa Valley College and moved between a newspaper and newsletter at various time periods. We only have a smattering of copies for this publication, but based on the note of "19th year" in the Friday, March 28, 1969 issue, the first issue was most likely published in 1950. The final year of publication is unclear based on the issues that we have.

The Napa Callege Voice started as a newsletter in the 1970s, called "The Voice" (and later "The voice of Napa Valley College"), which was producted by the student government, but then in the early 1980s, it was briefly turned into a newspaper. We only have select copies of this publication, and the ways in which the dates, volumes, and issue numbers are printed vary considerably.

The Matrix was produced out by the Associated Student Body of Napa Valley College. The library has copies of the first two issues, but we were unable to determine when the last issue was published and what volume and issue number this was.
